An interesting theme in the film concerns the issue of control. Within the Matrix people’s minds are trapped and their bodies life-sized batteries for machines. As technology advances there is the constant question of who is controlling who, the computer or man? This is a theme that has been explored in many different types of films, such as Tron (1982) and Total Recall (1990). The latter film is similar to The Matrix as the main character is unable to tell the virtual, computer programmed world from the real world. In the film Tron the main character must defeat the Master Control Program in order to gain freedom from the computer world he is trapped inside of.
